I'll be updating this guide over time, this is to help people new to RP learn how to do it well and how to do it right.
First, a few basic rules to follow :
1-Remember it's not just about you, it's about everyone having fun. Let others join in your rp if the plot allows.
2-Don't go around killing or attacking friendly NPCs for no reason. Going up against and randomly attacking a spellstorm npc or a golem just because you were bored makes you look bad and probably gets your character killed(exp penalty for respawns after level 3). The designers wanted the npcs there for a reason, be it design reasons or plot reasons and if you don't have an In-Character reason for attacking them, don't.
3-Don't PVP without good reason. It's not hard to find a reason, maybe you and another person decide to spar in-character, but either way, don't disrupt other people roleplaying to do it and keep it IC.
4-If another person doesn't want you to do it to them, don't do it to them
5-Stay In-character at all times on our server. You can go out of character in tells or in party chat. Going out of character now and then is fine, just try to keep it to a minimum
6-Don't shorten words to type faster, it gives off a bad impression. For example, don't shorten "see you "to "c u" or use things like 'ttyl' and 'brb' while IN-character. Out of character it's fine.
7-Follow our naming convention rules. Not following this one might get you removed from the server.
8-Communicate, on the forums, to others ingame, most people are helpful and willing to make new friends and help you out if you act maturely and courteously.
What if you're really new. New to RP even? Here's some things that might help :
What is 'IC' and 'OOC"?
IC is In-character, OOC is out of character. When you speak OOC you are talking as you, the person behind the keyboard. When you speak IC though you are speaking as your character. A character who's life, mind and experiences are different from your's. You can think of it as playing a role for a play or a movie, just there's no script, you make up what your character does and says as you go along as though you were that character.
What is Metagaming and Why is it Bad?
Metagaming is using OOC knowledge while in-character. For example, if you know, out of character, because you discovered it out of character, that a villain is going to capture the princess tomorrow, you shouldn't act on that information IN-character, because your character doesn't know it. Metagaming is bad because it destroys the storyline and is essentially 'cheating the plot'. A
nother example : Anakin doesn't let Mace kill the Emperor because his actor knows that Darth finally figures out that the Emperor has to die at the end.
Act maturely and courteously. Your character can be a jerk IC, but you shouldn't be OOC! To other players AND Gms included. offending and/or griefing a GM could get you booted, penalized or banned. Repeatedly griefing players even after warnings can also get you banned.
If there are any questions, please just reply to this post and ask and I will be happy to clarify.
